CLEAVER AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED 2018
Johannesburg, 30 May 2019: The country’s very best butcheries were announced at a luncheon held today at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.
Now in their fourteenth year, theCleaver Awards, which are proudly supported by Freddy Hirsch, acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.
Mr Dewald Olivier, who was appointed as executive officer of the The SA Feedlot Association (SAFA) last year, says that since these Awards started in 2005, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers show that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval, most importantly because a butchery cannot enter themselves, they have to be nominated by their customers.
The Cleaver Awards are an initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum. Consumers are asked towards the end of every year to vote and nominate their best butchery, either via SMS or online. These nominations are tallied and finalists are individually and anonymously assessed against a 212 pointchecklist.
Guests at the awards today included seniormembers of the meat production and retail industry, Awardfinalists from around the country, judges and media.
Butchers were judged according to three categoriesnamely;
- Butcheries with threeor more till points,
- Butcheries with three or fewer till points and,

Since these awards started in 2005, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers show that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval. An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum, these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.
While many top butcheries win a Cleaver Award year after year, the last year has seen a new trend developing, whereby new butcheries are being nominated for the first time and winning. Some of these new butcheries are new stores which have been opened by long time Cleaver winners, such as Boma Meat Market, with their new store, Boma Olympus in Faerie Glen, Pretoria, winning a National Platinum Award.
“To have won various Cleaver awards over the past 10 years, is a real honour to Boma Meat Market. 2016 marks a special year as our brand new branch in Olympus won Platinum National in its first year,” says Hendrik Steenkamp, owner of Boma Meat Market.
“The Cleaver Awards encourage the BOMA Meat Market team to sustain the best quality and service delivery to its valued customers. Thank you to the Red Meat Industry for the opportunity to proudly wear its seal of approval.”
Butchers were judged according to three categories namely;
- Butcheries with four or more till points,
- Butcheries with three or fewer till points and,
- Food market / Supermarket butcheries
The Cleaver Awards is one of the initiatives of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum to promote South African Beef and to recognise outstanding service. Another initiative held in 2015 called “A si phekeleni impilo” – Let’s Cook for Life, was undertaken in partnership with the South African Chefs Association (SACA). 26 previously unemployed students were accepted for an intensive nine week red meat cooking course and were taught skills to create career opportunities for enthusiastic future chefs. Two years on and 70% of these students are permanently employed within the hospitality industry.
Last year saw another initiative take place whereby small business owners within the red meat / catering industries were offered dedicated training, once again in partnership with SACA, to better enable their businesses to grow and succeed.
2017 will see the South African Red Meat Industry Forum and SACA partner again to bring versions of both the above two initiatives to those in need. These Culinary programmes are assisting the Red Meat Industry in fulfilling its desire to empower and build a new class of professionally trained individuals and to raise the standards of their future business operations, business practice and food service.
The winners in each category of the Cleaver Awards, proudly supported by Freddy Hirsch, received Platinum Awards and the runners up Gold Awards. First prize winners in each national category received a R 20 000 cash prize and a Platinum Trophy Award. The runners up received a R 10 000 cash prize as well as a Gold Cleaver Award Trophy. All of the provincial winners received either a Platinum or Gold Cleaver Award Trophy in their category. Three consumers who nominated the three National Platinum winners each received a voucher for a R1 500 hamper of beef products from the winning butcher.

BEST BUTCHERIES ANNOUNCED 2016
It’s time to find out who are SA’s top butcheries:
Johannesburg, 14 April 2016: The country’s top butchers are certainly worth their beef. The best butcheries both nationally and regionally were announced at a luncheon today attended by senior members of the meat production and retail industry, award finalists, judges and media.
The Cleaver Awards, which are proudly supported by Freddy Hirsch, were launched in 2005 to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards amongst butcheries. Since these awards started eleven years ago, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers show that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval, most importantly because a butchery cannot enter themselves, they have to be nominated by their customers.
Furthermore Cleaver Award winners have come to realise the extent to which a Cleaver Award is recognition of quality in everything they do. While many top butcheries win a Cleaver Award year after year, 2015 has also seen some brand new butchery stars getting the recognition they deserve by winning their first Cleaver Award. These include Country Meat in Fourways; King’s Meat Deli in Lynnbridge Mall; Jandre’s Neat Meats in Valhalla; Power Meat in Welkom, Continental Butchery in Port Elizabeth and Oudshoorn Spar in Oudshoorn. The South African Red Meat Industry extends a warm welcome to these new winners, winners voted for by their loyal and satisfied customers.
“Some of the finalists have scored up to 99.8% on a 212 point checklist which is used to independently assess all of these contestants. This means that for some of the top butcheries in the country, the difference between winning or not winning a Cleaver Award could come down to a point of a percent,” says Dave Ford, Chairman of the South African Red Meat Industry forum.
Guests at today’s Awards lunch held at Definitive Conferencing in Isando, Johannesburg were treated to a delicious variety of meat, including superior quality South African Beef, prepared on the latest range of braais by the Weber culinary team, thanks to a new association between the Cleaver Awards and Weber.
Nominations were opened towards the end of last year for consumers around the country t
o vote and nominate their best butchery. A record number of nominations totalling over 35 000 were received, a phenomenal feat when one considers that 3 500 nominations were received when the competition first launched in 2005.
An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum, these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.
Butchers were judged according to three categories namely;
- Butcheries with four or more till points.
- Butcheries with three or fewer till points.
- Food market / Supermarket butcheries.
The winners in each category received Platinum Awards and the runners up Gold Awards:
First prize winners in each national category received a R 20 000 cash prize and a Platinum Trophy Award. The runners up received a R 10 000 cash prize as well as a Gold Cleaver Award Trophy. All of the provincial winners received either a Platinum or Gold Cleaver Award Trophy in their category. Three consumers who nominated the three National Platinum winners each received a voucher for a R1 500 hamper of beef products from the winning butcher.
